General Description:

The practitioner will receive an up-to-date overview of the rules that apply to marital ­dissolutions. This is the free, not for credit version of this seminar and you will not receive an attendance certificate if you register and attend.

Learning Objective:

After completing this course the participant will be able to:

  • Summarize the requirements for alimony payments to be taxable and deductible for agreements executed before January 1, 2019.
  • Describe the effect of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on alimony and child support.
  • Describe the options for and tax effects of dividing marital property, including the family residence and the assignment of a working spouse's interest in a qualified pension and profit sharing plan.
  • Determine the proper treatment of child support payments, including payments associated with a contingency relating to a child, the dependency exemption, and the use of Form 8332.
  • Determine which parent is eligible for the child care credit, child tax credit, earned income credit, education credit, and deduction for tuition and fees.
  • Summarize the rules for claiming a dependency exemption for a child.

Instructors:

Mark A. Vogel is a retired professor and director of the University of Denver Graduate Tax Program, where for 38 years he taught courses in individual, fiduciary, tax accounting, partnership, and corporate taxation. He is the author of Divorce Taxation Guide (John Wiley & Sons) and Individual Taxation (Shepards/McGraw-Hill). He received a J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation from the University of Denver College of Law and an undergraduate accounting degree from the University of Notre Dame. He is also a CPA licensed in Illinois.
